Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Her grandmother raised her as a single child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she entered Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was shattered when she dropped out of high school. Her career began as a spoken-word performer and performing live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. In an Roots show she made her debut as an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Additionally, she was able to gain experience in the performing arts during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the very first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
